Abstract: The magnetic and elastic properties of ferromagnetic materials and others depend on each other. The different couplings between these properties are called magnetoelastic effects. These effects can be separated into two main categories, direct effects and their inverse effects. The most important direct effect is magnetostriction. The latter reflects the phenomenon whereby a ferromagnetic sample deforms due to magnetic interactions that may be either within the sample itself (spontaneous magnetostriction) or a consequence of an external magnetic field (forced magnetostriction).
